Léon Wijnands

Head of Sustainability

Léon Wijnands is Head of Sustainability in the Netherlands since 1 November 2022.
In his role he is responsible for driving sustainable impact through 15.000 employees and 8 million customers.
Prior to his current role he led the private bank of ING in the Netherlands through a huge transformation in his capacity as Head of Private Banking and Wealth Management.

Léon joined ING in 1990 and has extensive experience in sales and marketing, having led the Dutch Customer Contact Centres and the Customer Intelligence team. In earlier years he was responsible for all 21 branches in the district of Amsterdam and has led many marketing initiatives and change programmes.

In 2013 he was appointed as Global Head of Sustainability. Since then Léon has played a key role in integrating sustainability into ING’s business and making ING an international climate action leader in the industry.
He is member of the Development Cooperation Committee of the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV). The AIV is an independent body which advises the Dutch government and parliament on foreign policy.

Next to that he is board member of the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (VBDO).
Léon Wijnands holds a master degree in business economics, a master in business administration (MBA) and a master in financial economics (MFE).
