Joris Krijger is a Tech Ethicist working at the intersection of theory and practice. He currently combines a PhD position on the topic of Ethics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Erasmus University Rotterdam with a position as Ethics & AI Officer at the Dutch bank de Volksbank. Joris has studied Philosophy, Economic Psychology and Film & Literature Studies in Leiden, Glasgow and Buenos Aires and founded two tech start-ups. After a period as tech entrepreneur, his focus shifted towards responsible innovation and ethical AI. Joris presently works on bridging the gap between ethical ideals and everyday practice in AI by studying the operationalization of ethics in data science contexts from an academic and practical perspective. Additionally, he holds positions as a.o. Advisory Board Member at the Frankfurt Big Data Lab and Founding Editorial Board Member of Springer Nature’s AI and Ethics Journal. For his contributions to the positive societal impact of innovative technology and research he received a.o. the Wijffels Innovation Award and a Graduate School Award for PhD Excellence.
